Re: Ultra and ISF Comparison

Theoretically each new colony location requires sufficient defenses to hold it. This is where most empire go cheap and wait until there is a threat because in the nature of Starfire, you can't defend against a closed WP into your systems before it is used. And it will generally be used to invade. De...

Re: Ship design: Weapon Mix

As a test once I took G as my starting SRW and I do not recommend it. The value of SRW is the multiplier they can provide in close range WP defense. Having G meant that it was very difficult to defend WPs close in which made it difficult to deny enemies entry into my systems. Since I was focused on ...

Re: Assymetric Scenarios

If you want to build your own scenario for WP defense I recommend the following. Decide on an amount to build an attacking fleet and decide on technology SLs. (e.g. 10,000 MCr.) Then start with three times the original amount (e.g. 30,000 MCr) and start an auction build for how much less you could b...

Re: Ship design: Weapon Mix

Starfire tends to focus on fleet design. One tricky problem is that you will never have enough ships to face the current threat (at least it will seem like it). So your fleets will rarely be at optimal power during a game. Your designs will change based on the threat you face. If you are facing a sw...

Re: New project

I've always liked the Pt E weapons used against R and L combo

Giving the aliens Pt and E and having the humans using R and L would be interesting.

The problem is that L doesn't really work well with any LRW system so F is probably more sporting.

Re: NPR Research: learning WP travel.

thebard you've made a few assumptions that I think would be helpful to go over. 1. Xa doesn't only take gravametric readings. As Cralis said Xa is a whole suite of science instruments that happens to have the ability to also find WPs. There are other functions of Xa which is to identify data on enem...

Re: Buying RP

What is the goal for bumping up survey requirements? is it to make games last longer? I see the following potential impacts. 1. Less systems explored so a lucky system has bigger impact. 2. Racial ability to reduce survey point is now 6x more costly (or 6x more effective). Same with reducing SL of X...

Re: Trade Hub

Why isn't a trade hub created as part of the payment for the trade agreement?

True trade agreements are too rewarding but creating things that make them more expensive to start just encourages the GFFP and CFFP routes.

Re: XO.04: how many (XO) on a ship?

You can only mount 4 XOs on a DD in that case. The round up has to do with hull spaces and might have been a time when XOs were gong to count certain systems as allowing to be used by XO mounts.

Re: Relative Effectiveness of TL x vs TL y with same cost

Thinking about it, I don't think defeating any force more than 3 levels above you in most tech will work well without a 1.5x advantage in force starting in ULTRA. I wouldn't fight an SL50 ship without SL47 technology and it would be ugly without you having a larger force.
