Beacons.

One EW method not currently in Starfire is to make something a nice juicy target, drowning out other target sources. So perhaps a beacon generator would be 4HS, and when active give +2 to hit the ship. But, -1 to hit other datalink members in the same hex (assumed close formation).

Thats an interesting idea. How would you plant the beacon on the enemy ship through its drive field without destroying it and how could the target remove it. Also how long would it last.

It reminds me of a tech from alkeada dawn which fired a pressor beam at the target, acting as a path for missles to hit, giving big bonuses. Lasted one turn I think. Jrill weapon.

I read it more like you build a ship of your own as a "damage sponge".

Say, you take a heavy cruiser and put nothing but engines, crew space, the beacon generator and armor/shield on it, so it can take a tremendous amount of damage while keeping your other ships alive.

While I am not sure I would sacrifice the offensive punch of a ship just to soak off damage, with advanced armor/shields, you could get a darn high amount of HTK on it.

What is the point of this "beacon" system, because I must say that it eludes me, except to point a big red bullseye on the ship. :?

Ship 1 in the datagroup is the expensive one with the electronics. Ships 2/3 are normal. Ship 4 has half the weapons, but more defences instead, and a beacon. When you're firing on the group, either take -1 to-hit, or have to pound ship 4 into dust first (at +2 to-hit).

You can also carry them on a big ship in long-range LRW duels, and light them off when another datagroup member has been hammered to help protect it (especially with shield regenerators, you'll have to take that -1 to-hit or see the shields come back up pretty quickly..). Or...

Trust me, lots of uses for it :)

(XO salvos, carrier/escort protection, mind games with the enemy...)

Seems like all the same use to me ... make yourself a bigger target. But it seems like by the nature of the mechanics, you're not forcing incoming LRW's to be sucked in onto the ship with the beacon. And heck, wouldn't the other player know that there's something awry when there's a to-hit difference of 3 between one ship and the other ships in the DG? Wouldn't he expect that the beaconed ship is trying to lure fire onto itself for some reason? If the firing player chooses to ignore it, the beacon system is just a pile of wasted megacredits and hull spaces. :?

He would know it's on, of course, it's a big targeting beacon after all.

And it forces him to take a -1 to-hit the other ships in the datagroup if he tries to "ignore" it, which is worthwhile in it's own right. It's the sort of interesting choice...

(deliberately amplifying your own signature to draw long-range missile fire is really not a new concept, I'm just applying it to Starfire. There's a couple of great examples of it in the bolo stories, actually, thinking about it..)

I would love to see the reaction of personnel when asigned to this ship. Sort of like a Forlorn Hope vessel. Encourage desertion I would think. :D

Or mutiny, if the fleet resorted to dragooning crews
