Conversion from Classic (3rdR) to Cosmic

Postby Morpheus on Wed 16 Sep 2015 14:04

Have you put any thought into ship conversion from Classic Starfire (3rd Revision) to Cosmic?

Specifically, how hard will it be to convert ships from something like Stars at War to Cosmic so that I could play out the scenarios in ISW 1-3 if I wanted to using the newer Cosmic rules when they come out?

Also, since you aren't including any of the old canonical races from 3rdR (TFN, KON, etc.), will you be putting together a conversion guide so that people could play with the ships of the canonical races using the Cosmic rules?

The biggest issue at this point would be the hull table. It really doesn't work with the ISW-1 escorts. For other ships (except the FG), I would use the closest hull size and adjust the shields and armor. Once you work out the hulls, Classic races should fit in.

I can't help you there. Years ago I played a bunch of scenarios from ISW-1 (Star at War) that were converted to Elite StarFire (previous version of Ultra). It worked, but I don't have any of the conversions :(

I guess it would take a little bit of work since the 3rdR hull table is different from the Cosmic hull table. I'm not really fan of the small/cheap ES swarm ships in 3rdR anyway.

What about systems? I saw that (in the Guns, Guns, Guns thread below) that Sprint/Gun Missiles will become "torpedoes"? Are the hull spaces for these changed systems going to be similar to the hull spaces required in 3rdR?

I haven't discussed Cosmic development in about 2 years. Not sure about where things stand as far as weapons go. The ES swarms were a hallmark of the KON. Part of it stems from their honor code, which favored large numbers of small units. Capital ships were seen as less than honorable, as it took away from the individual. Kon fleet organization at the beginning of ISW-1 was large numbers of small ships backed up by s small numberer of CL's.

I would keep the weapon sizes the same for now, convert G and W to R, Wc to Rc etc and adjust ammo loads as needed (for example replacing some SM with torpedos.

Don't forget that while it is more useful to use the maximum hull spaces for a particular size class, you don't have to. This means converting from older versions can be as simple as just porting the hull over as is and adjusting any tech system differences. e.g., if a particular system doesn't exist in Cosmic (or any other version), replace it with a comparable system that does exist. This only really becomes an issue if the new size class requires a different number of engines for the listed speed.

Yeah, I'm finally back (again)! Sometimes, life (and 9yo son's) don't leave you time to play SF and earn a paycheck. :/

No, really! Matt actually made me an admin here!
