ULTRA Mini-Contest #7: 1 May to 22 May [Closed]

Postby Cralis on Thu 05 May 2011 02:36

Greetings everyone, welcome to contest #7 of the ULTRA mini-contest series. This contest will run from May 1st to May 15th.

This contest is: Best New AP Tech

This contest is focusing on our automated little friends the drones and buoys. What kinds of new tech do you think we are missing? I'd imagine that we are missing a bit of advanced SL 20 + tech! But any kind will do.

Parameters:
1. Must contain the rules and at least starting technology data.
2. Needs to fully describe the technology, pseudo-science, and anything else relevant.
3. Each submission must be in a separate post.

Good luck!

An extra week, and apparently nobody has any ideas for this one yet...

I put a couple in the 'high tech' contest - feel free to shuffle them over

If you want to re-submit them, go right ahead. We are keeping the post chains intact (i.e. not moving them). In fact, we were going to suggest that you do that!

Capital Mine Warhead - APEXc
The capital explosive beam warhead uses a temporary drive field to direct an increased amount of power to into the attacking beam. While not more efficient than the standard EX warhead in terms of mass to energy output, they have much improved range and penetration ability. There are no precision variants.

Size: 5 or 6
Damage/range/skipping: per beta generation capital weapon of type.
Cost: 50MC or more
SL: 25, AP tree

Commentary: You need a bigger buoy for a single attack, but get more range, and a much better skipping to damage ratio for E and L. You pay a premium for what you get, though.

Self Replicating Fields (SRF)

Advances in the field of nanotechnology repair robots and distributed networking systems provides the necessary stimulus to make resilient AP fields. The (SRF) may be mounted on AP of any type with a limit of one per hull. Each tactical turn, during Shield Regeneration of the Record Keeping Phase, an (SRF) may repair up to its value worth of DP in a given AP field. Any number of (SRF) may affect a given field each turn. Each (SRF) may only repair up to its SL worth of DP per month. Any AP field with an (SRF) has its maintenance requirement doubled that month.

Starts at SL35. Prereqs any (DAM).

{k} SL 35 - (SRFa) - 3 HS - 200 MC - repairs 1 DP per tac turn
{k} SL 41 - (SRFb) - 3 HS - 250 MC - repairs 2 DP per tac turn
{k} SL 48 - (SRFe) - 4 HS - 300 MC - repairs 3 DP per tac turn
{k} SL 55 - (SRFi) - 4 HS - 375 MC - repairs 4 DP per tac turn

Maneuver Program Module (MP)

Drones suffer from an inability to respond to external stimuli in their maneuver programs. Advances in both AI systems and quantum computing and programming created breakthroughs allowing for a limited ability to reprogram drones in flight.

Each drone must have a complete maneuver program installed before it is activated. The program can be as long as the race desires and once a drone reaches the end of its maneuver program it starts over from the beginning. An (MP) allows a drone to have its maneuver program to be reset every few tactical turns (as noted by the (MP) generation). The new maneuver program goes into effect in the movement phase of the tactical turn after it is received and may include command such as reorient [D9.06.3.1], new paths [D9.06.2], and possibly new speeds. Any changes to speed are for the duration of the new program and limited by the drone's capabilities.

New commands must come from either a (CIC) or an (APC).

An enemy who has broken the encryption codes of an empire [U2.04] and [U3.05.3], may issue overriding commands to enemy (MP). When there is conflicting commands received by an (MP), the first one received in a tactical turn takes precedence.

The new maneuver program counts as a control slot for any (APC) or (CIC).

{c} SL 32 - (MPa) - 2 HS - 50 MC - Reprogram after 8 tactical turns
{c} SL 35 - (MPb) - 2 HS - 60 MC - Reprogram after 6 tactical turns
{c} SL 39 - (MPe) - 3 HS - 100 MC - Reprogram after 5 tactical turns, allows speed changes
{c} SL 40 - (MPi) - 3 HS - 125 MC - Reprogram after 4 tactical turns, allows speed changes

** Note this technology requires a change to D9.06.

Endurance Packs (EP)

An (EP) module represents enhanced durability in components and redundant systems to keep the platform running. The expensive components help overcome a liming factor of many static AP, the need for regular maintenance. An (EP) has a maintenance cycle which allows the AP to function normally with only one month's maintenance every x number of months.

If a given field has AP with (EP) and some AP without, the AP mounting the (EP) are added to the field totals when calculating elimination due to insufficient maintenance (L7.02), but they themselves may not be used to satisfy losses unless they are outside their maintenance cycle.

{c} SL 42 - (EPa) - 1 HS - AP is x3 cost - Maintenance cycle = +1 month
{c} SL 46 - (EPb) - 1 HS - AP is x4 cost - Maintenance cycle = +2 months
{c} SL 50 - (EPe) - 2 HS - AP is x6 cost - Maintenance cycle = +3 months
{c} SL 55 - (EPi) - 2 HS - AP is x8 cost - Maintenance cycle = +4 months
{c} SL 55 - (EPm) - 2 HS - AP is x10 cost - Maintenance cycle = +5 months

AP must be the least inventive area in STARFIRE, as it seems pretty straight forward. Then again, it could be (as was suggested) that the restrictive rules on AP automation could be a hindering factor. Either way, we only had 4 submissions in this contest. There wasn't as much to sort through, but the submissions were very interesting. Ultimately, the most unique idea won out, and the runner up filled a hole that we didn't realize existed!

First Place: Self Replicating Fields by Dazrand! (8 tickets)

Runner Up: Capital Mine Warhead by Club! (4 tickets)

Congratulations Dazrand!
