Good call on explaining that one out a bit.

From the anecdotal WP tracework I've done (I haven't automated any sort of graph tracer, so this has been limited to small sample sizes that I work by hand), Solar-style linking appears to get players access to more systems more quickly, because only one side of the link needs to be Open / Concealed (accounting for ~70% of WPs), but good access isn't necessarily bi-directional: one player may have to take a 5-system loop to get past the Secret WP he can't find (but that his opponent came through from the Open WP on the other end). But the graph tends to close pretty well at low SLs.

Ultra-style, meanwhile, is far more balanced by direction, because of that one-visibility limit, but is more likely to isolate chunks of the universe from everybody.

This will be my first game with real-live people in 33 years, so I have no fixed opinions....

Crew Grade - if its there, use it! Having said that, this increases the paper work and therefore
what the SM has to oversee : I prefer a "100 turn game without crew grade" to a "40-turn and then the SM has to pull out because its too time consuming", so this depends on how much extra work this gives to the SM (I have no idea on this) and how much time the SM has/will have available.

Visibility - have no idea what I will prefer -

NPR - "the more, the merrier" - my preference ,as long as the SM doesn't mind the extra work.

Random Events make it more interesting

Lomn, I'm up to run/guide an NPR if you need it. I don't have the time at the moment to play a full player race, but should have no problems with an NPR once you get one. :twisted:

None survive the harvest!

Yeah, I'm finally back (again)! Sometimes, life (and 9yo son's) don't leave you time to play SF and earn a paycheck. :/

No, really! Matt actually made me an admin here!

I think the last time I played a live PBEM game was one Marvin ran a few years back, was running a gas giant race. Unfortunately we didn't get a chance to get very far.
Definitely interested in giving it a try, if nothing else maybe I can finally figure out how to succesfully invade a planet.
I like the Ultra WP connection rules with a slight chance (say 5%) of connecting to any other WP type.
In general I'm willing and interested in most options incuding non T/ST races and race design but can easily go with the flow.

I've got a PERL script that does a pretty good job linking using the ULTRA rules and while a few systems may get isolated, the rest well connected. It outputs a file that can be used by Graphvis to create a map (though I use Omnigraph which allows me to meddle with the map). Hm. I guess I never put it in the downloads section. Here's the linking section of the code. When you use clustering the map comes out very interesting and it's been fun for multiplayer games.

Code: Select all
sub link_wps {
   for ($i = 1; $i <= $max_world; $i++) {
      $oddcount += $countWP[$i];   # totals the number of WPs in the universe
   }
   if ( $oddcount % 2 != 0) {
      $countWP[int(rand()*$max_world)+1]++; # adds one to a random system if the total WPs are odd
   }
   $cluster_size = int($max_world/10);
   for ($h = 1; $h <=10; $h++) {
      for ($i = 1; $i <= $max_world; $i++) { # I move through the universe placing 1 WP per system then do it again
         if ($countWP[$i] < $h || $links[$i] >= $countWP[$i]) {
            next;   # if all the WPs are linked I skip the system
         }
         $z = int(rand() * 10) +1;
         if ($cluster == 0) {
            $z = 11;  #  just makes sure that if clustering is turned off it jumps to the right place
                      #  not particularily elegant way of doing it
         }
         if ($z < 9) {
            $link_found = 0;
            $destination = int(rand()*$cluster_size*2)+1 - $cluster_size; # picks a random number based on cluster size around the current system
            if ($destination > 0) {
               $direction = 1;
            } else {
               $direction = -1;  # this section prepares if there isn't a valid link within the cluster size

Honestly as it is my first game I'm shooting from the hip regarding what I prefer.
PracticalM 's clustering sounds interesting, and I'd like to try Crew Grade, even though I don't know how much recordkeeping that effectively means.
Many NPR's also sound good, if we find the players to control them.

OK, so it looks like we've got four people who indicated interest in running a full empire (thebard, Whitecold, kedrake, and Sunwolf). I've gotten a four-player universe assembled (with an option to drop in an extra quadrant or two if there's a late arrival; keep speaking up if you're interested), so I think I'm ready to start collecting / sending relevant info.

In particular, I've opened a campaign thread over in the fiction section so that this forum won't get clogged ("The Price of Destiny" appears to be an otherwise-unused campaign name, and it sounds suitably space opera-ish). That thread will shortly contain a big post for rules in force, a post detailing where things have deviated from standard in Section K, and other stuff for general distribution as I think of it.

I'd like the main players to PM an acceptable email address to me (or just email me directly at lomn75 /at/ gmail.com).

Thanks!

Hmmm you know, we could either open up a fiction sub-forum (especially if any of you want to write stories or post turn results), but you could use that to post information. That would make it all easier to keep together and find.
