Club VS The Exodians

Postby Club on Sat 20 Jul 2013 22:30

Me and Xveers have had a major battle between mt race and the Exodians. I shall now post my order of battle, he shall post his, and then we shall wait a couple days while you guess what happened, while mercilessly giving you meaningless hints.

I was assaulting through a D warp point. I'd just gotten the efficient bureaucracy special, and jumped the gun a couple turns earlier than I should have.

We joke that someone in my race must have read Shakespeare - They killed all their lawyers, and things were better for having done it.

I had a really impressive number of ships, a lot of which were obsolete by 40 turns and 6+ tech levels. The passives especially. Still, it's not the sort of fleet you want to get into a knife fight with. -1 and +1 notations are for crew grades. No admiral.

It's been a week. Is noone going to ask me how the fight happened? Or even tell me my designs suck?

Sniff. You don't love me anymore, do you? ;P

OK, Here goes.

First battle. Six gunboat flights power through the WP. They hold their fire the turn they come through. There are four BS2s next to them. The turn around, shoot, and on turn three depart. I'm not sure if I actually did any damage, but they did see that there were three monitors and a BB within fifteen or so hexes of the WP, and that the bases were armed with many, many plasmaguns. Lose two GBb, gain some information

I then delayed a few hours, to ensure that the enemy fleet was not at readiness

Battle two.

First turn. Three Salt BC and three Fraternity come through the WP. Three of the enemy bases get dogpiled upon, with each being the target of a Lcb and 15 Pge. Good times, though nothing dies. Turns out the monitor datagroup are where they were.

Second turn. The units on the board each sharp turn to face the enemy datagroup. Turns out there is another one out there, fast dreadnoughts, with a BB in the group. Through the WP come three profit II BBs, escorted by the Croc and Prybars.

When the gundecks clear, there are no bases around the WP any longer, although the salts are getting a bit low on passives. The monitors are each armed with 4 Rc and 13 Pte, with a Lha along for kicks. (It was supposed to be 6 Rc, but we missed a couple when we counted them up. I forgot to use my PD mod from my special, so figure it evens out)

Third turn. All the plasmgun armed ships start running for the datagroup. THe battleships move up until they are at range 11, and proceed to bombard the group with plasma torps. Unfortunately, they were also at ideal range for the enemy torps, and so got knocked out of 'link quickly. Another three BB and more prybars arive.

Turn 4 - The Nest comes through the WP, pointed away from the monitors, and promptly hits the gas, getting as far away from the firefight as it can. After it come the four journeymen and two GBb. They head for the sound of the guns

The first group of Profit IIs maintain their position, wile the second datagroup moves up into the same position. The Salts get into long range for their plasmaguns, coming from the rear quarter. The various lighter craft are even closer than that, and are pincering from the front. It appears all of the monitors have finished activating.

The Salts are mauled or destroyed, but the 5-Lha-armed BB is wreckage. This battlecrusier class has more than proved itself for having a threat potential that cannot be ignored and the ability to soak HUGE amounts of damage, while having respectable ability to deal same when in range. One of my newcomer BBs is also destroyed, and the DNf are launching gunboats - 3 per dreadnought.

I would have commented earlier, but was waiting for the 'opposing forces' list you said would likely be posted before jumping in.
Liking the AAR so far. Keep it up!

But as a question, why didn't you load the FQ onto the first couple waves XOs and launch them on the turn they came through? They have a healthy punch up close with their weapons and really dilute the fire on your ships in the openning turns. They also help to deal with any sqns the defender launches.

1) We're converting the campaign slowly over to solar, and I don't have XoL (Want, but don't have)

2) Just didn't think of it.

Fifth turn

An entire Raider/Reaver datagroup pours through the warp point, and takes the time to time to dress it's formation. A number of Prybars come through as well, and fly towards the action at maximum speed.

Between the gunboats and Monitors, another of my battleships is crippled, and the Salts die a glorious death. But I've got a lot of plasmaguns at only a couple hexes range, and destroy a monitor. Four battleships with essentially intact armaments don't hurt to have either, out of datalink or not.

Given our disparity in resources, I figure I've won this battle at this point, no matter what else happens.

The Nest starts launching fighters, while getting the hell out of the range of the nutjobs shooting at each other. The enemy DNf launch fighters.

Sixth turn

Another raider/reaver datagroup gomes through the warp point, while the first one moves up to support the Profit II's

More swarming. I lose a pair of Journeymen, and another BB is finished off, but the monitors are essentially finished.

The Exodian's three carriers turn and start moving away, escorted by that nasty Lha battleship.

Turn seven.

Kite Carriers start coming through the WP.

The Exodian fighters and gunboats start falling back. I'm not in the best position to pursue, as I had positioned myself to get my forces, which had gotten a bit spread out, back in some kind of formation.

The smart thing to do would be pursue. I decide not to, not because of any tactical reasoning, but because it's late in the day, and I have to get going. I'll have to kill them another time.

Analysis

Blowout. There is no way to consider this anything but a win for me. 3 Mt and a BB are probably a significant fraction of his forces, and I don't think he has a way to replace them, short of getting lucky on migration rolls

My losses -
2 Prybar destroyed, another crippled
3 Profit II BB destroyed, another crippled
3 Salt BC destroyed
5 Fraternity FG destroyed
2 Journeyman CL destroyed
2 Gunboat squadrons destroyed, another crippled
1 Reaver DD destroyed

The crippled Prybar isn't worth fixing, I'll just scuttle the thing in space. The damaged Profit II will be repaired, and probably upgraded to Profit IIC at the same time.

Tactically, he just set up too close to the WP, and didn't manage to activate his units quickly enough. If I'd had to catch his LRW armed heavy units in a stern chase things might have turned out differently, but I had plasmagun units crawling up his rear before he had a chance to engage in a proper deep space chase battle.

I was surprised at how few squadrons his dreadnought carried; only six, and a total of nine bays. I think there are two reasons - first, that he followed his design priorities, and each of the carriers had to mount a SRW, which he made a Lha, eating a large amount of volume. Again from his design priorities, was the passive percentages, which ate an even larger number of HS. The wisdom of the Lha is debatable, but the thing packs a punch and gives it a decent anti-squadron ability.

I think that the racial design rules should have a rule added that allows carriers to halve the passive they are required to carry, carriers defined as fast hulls where half or more of all offensive equipment is squadron or launch bays. Otherwise the design rules tend to give you really heavily armoured carriers. These guys suffer from that.

Could you add in a quick summary of the opponent's losses as you know them?
I thought they had some bases and such. Just to get a better feel for the comparison.

That is an interesting point. I use the starting set-up rules for NPC designs, but as GM, I tend to modify that as technologies emerge. But stricter GMs (and ones with other players) shouldn't have to make fortress carriers. Although rarely, they should, if the die roll for a new 'carrier design table' says so, eh?
I weary of the chasssse. Wait for me. I will be mercccciful and quick.
